Looking Back and Looking Ahead

Happy New Year! We hope that you all had a good time over the festive period and that the new year brings lots of new wildlife moments whether they are with Speyside Wildlife or during your spare time.

Spotted Flycatcher (Kate M)

As mentioned the previous blog, British or Scottish bird year lists are a great way to record the number of birds you have seen in the year. Whether you have written them in a note book, or used a check list, they are good way of looking back at birding adventures from the year and count how many rarities or your favourites bird species of the year. The list can become competitive with colleagues trying to get to their two hundredth bird or trying to beat the number counted in a previous year. However, you record them, why not give the list a go yourself?!

Nosey Badger (Jamie S)

 The evening wildlife watching hide was very busy with plenty of great moments shared with guests who visited throughout the year. The seasons were full of action including the arrival of two Badger cubs and one Pine Marten kit was a highlight watching them grow and gain confidence, not without a few tumbles and sibling rivalry. Some nights turned in to a comedy show watching the Pine Martens tumbling over each other, playing hide and seek underneath the rocks and the acrobatic Badger climbing the tree. Too many memories to mention but be sure to read through previous blog posts for updates.

Warm Summer’s day (Kate M)

Weather has been mentioned a lot, but it is important to mention as it can certainly affect the behaviour of the animals. It continued to be cold until the end of April, which then led to four months of very warm and dry weather. Most birds had a successful breeding season due to the prolonged warm weather with waders having a harder time due to lochs drying up. There have been plenty of wildlife moments in 2018, from just on the doorstep to the islands of Scotland. Whatever your favourite moments were, there is always more to have, and the Cairngorms can be an exciting place to experience them. From the wildlife hide to see our nocturnal animals, day guiding to explore what the Cairngorms have to offer in a day, to international or UK holidays, make 2019 the year you explore new areas and find more wildlife ;
